How to Have a Productive Conversation About Politics at Work
No one wants to get into a heated political debate with their coworkers, especially over Zoom or on the phone. But what do you do if your colleague insists on bringing up the election or other fraught topics? Start by setting clear boundaries. Calmly agree upon some general ground rules. If things start to get emotional, watch yourself to make sure you’re not violating those boundaries, and gracefully exit the conversation if you feel the other person isn't respecting your agreed-upon terms. Be curious about your coworker’s views. When you genuinely inquire into others’ experiences and what shapes their perspective, there’s a good chance you’ll find things that surprise you, teach you, and open your mind. Point out areas of agreement, especially ones that require you to relinquish previously cherished “facts.” This makes it safe for the other person to do the same. Keeping these simple tactics in mind will help you navigate tricky conversations, protecting you and your relationships at work.

Hot Topic: Still SPACs

In April we mentioned SPACs were hot and the SEC issued public statements (from Corp Fin and a joint Corp Fin-OCA statement) to highlight key accounting and financial reporting considerations. In May, the CAQ issued our SPAC Alert with key considerations for auditors and audit committee members.

Why it matters. There are unique elements to SPACs. Audit committee members should consider all the key elements of public company readiness: financial reporting expertise, adequate internal control and corporate governance structures to comply with Sarbanes-Oxley requirements, stock exchange listing requirements such as internal audit, and ability of the external auditor to comply with PCAOB standards and SEC auditor rules.

Today’s Tip
Try Blue-Light-Filtering Glasses to Improve Sleep and Focus
The shift to working from home means that most of us are spending even more time looking at screens. And we all know the science on how harmful excessive screen time can be to our sleep and focus. The good news is that new research suggests that blue-light-filtering glasses (which reduce the amount of light that reaches your eyes) actually work. Specifically, the study found that the glasses boost the quantity and quality of people’s sleep, and this can lead to all sorts of positive benefits at work, including improved engagement, more ethical behavior, and increased creativity. Wearing blue-light-filtering glasses may be particularly useful when you’re at home, where work time often bleeds into personal time, and screen time can pile up fast. We all want to be our best selves at work, and this may be a relatively low-cost and straightforward solution that can help you do that.
